What to wear for Mardi Gras

Carnival season starts on January 6 and ends on Mardi Gras day, the day before Ash Wednesday. What you wear depends on the event:

Event Typical look
Parades Purple, green and gold: sequins, sets and comfortable layers
Date parties and campus events A themed dress, sequins or a metallic mini
Balls A floor-length gown (see formal dresses)
Brunches and house parties A bright day dress in the season's colors

The three colors stand for justice (purple), faith (green) and power (gold), and wearing at least one of them is the easiest way to look the part.

Plan for parade season

  • Book early. The biggest parade weekends fall right before Mardi Gras day.
  • Cover the weekend. The owner sets one flat price for each length (2, 4, 5, 7, 14 or 30 days), so one rental can cover several parades.
  • Ship it to where you're staying if you're traveling. Shipped rentals come with tracking and a prepaid return label.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to rent a Mardi Gras outfit?

Themed pieces on e.closet have a median rental price of $40 for the shortest length the owner offers, and formal gowns $50. Delivery and a small service fee show at checkout.

Can I rent a gown for a Mardi Gras ball?

Yes. Many balls are black tie, so look at floor-length gowns, and check the invitation for the dress code.

What if it gets damaged at a parade?

Normal wear is expected. Damage beyond that, and late returns, are charged under e.closet's Rental Protection Policy, so let the owner know right away.
