What to look for
Sorority and fraternity spring formals, semi-formals and spring galas mostly run from March through April. The pieces that work best:
- Pastels and soft brights: blush, butter yellow, sky blue, lilac and mint.
- Florals: 3D flowers, appliqué and printed florals.
- Lighter fabrics: satin, chiffon and organza rather than the velvet of winter formal.
- Midi and maxi lengths for a formal, short and flirty for a semi-formal. Check the invitation for the dress code.
Search formal pieces and filter by size, color and brand, then message the owner about fit before you book.
Plan ahead
Spring formal weekends stack up, and the best dresses get booked first.
- Book 3–4 weeks out, earlier if your chapter's formal is the same weekend as other schools'.
- Rent for the whole trip. If the formal is out of town, pick a rental length that covers travel. Owners price each length (2, 4, 5, 7, 14 or 30 days) as one flat amount.
- Pick it up locally if you can. It saves the delivery cost and any shipping delay.
Going to more than one?
Formal, semi-formal and date parties can land in the same month. Renting a different look for each costs less than buying one dress you'll be photographed in every time. For black tie, see formal and black-tie rentals.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to rent a spring formal dress?
Formal rentals on e.closet have a median price of $50 for the shortest rental the owner offers, and most rent for $35–$70. Delivery and a small service fee show at checkout.
When should I book?
Three to four weeks before the formal gives you the widest choice. A local pickup can work closer to the date.
Can I rent a dress for a formal in another city?
Yes. Have it shipped to where you're staying, or pick one up from a closet near the event, and choose a rental length that covers the trip.
What if it doesn't fit?
Message the owner for measurements before you book. Pieces that arrive not as described are covered under e.closet's refund policy.
