How renting a prom dress works

  1. Find the dress. Browse formal pieces and filter by size, color and brand. Each listing shows the owner's photos, the size and the rental prices.
  2. Message the owner. Ask for measurements, the length on her, and whether it needs a strapless bra. Every request has its own message thread.
  3. Choose your dates and delivery. Owners set a flat price for each rental length they offer (2, 4, 5, 7, 14 or 30 days). Choose local handoff, shipping or a same-city courier, depending on what the owner allows.
  4. Wear it to prom.
  5. Send it back. Return it the way it came, using the prepaid label for shipped rentals or a handoff for local ones, and mark it returned in the app.

When to book

  • 6–8 weeks before prom: start browsing. Most proms are held in spring.
  • 2–3 weeks before: book it. That leaves time to message the owner and, if you're local, meet up.
  • Rental length: choose a length that covers delivery and a day of buffer. A 4- or 5-day rental is a safe default for a shipped dress; a 2-day rental works for a local handoff the day before.

What it costs

The median formal rental on e.closet is $50 for the shortest length the owner offers. That's the dress itself. Shipping or courier costs show at checkout, and there's a small service fee. Compare that with buying: the typical original price owners list for these pieces is $270. Our rent vs. buy guide breaks it down.

Frequently asked questions

Can high school students rent a prom dress on e.closet?

Yes, if you're 16 or older. Under 18, you need a parent or guardian's consent and supervision to use e.closet, per its Terms of Service.

What if the prom dress doesn't fit?

Check measurements with the owner before booking, since fit issues aren't refundable when the listed size was accurate. If the dress arrives materially different from the listing, such as a different size than listed or undisclosed damage, you can file a claim in the app.

Do I have to dry clean it before returning it?

Only if the listing asks for it. Normal wear is expected. Damage beyond that, and late returns, are charged under e.closet's Rental Protection Policy.

Can I wear it to more than one event?

Yes, as long as both fall inside your rental dates. Longer rentals are priced as one flat amount, so a 7-day rental can cover prom and a post-prom photo shoot.

Can I rent out my dress after prom?

Yes. List it on e.closet and set your own rental prices. See how to rent out your prom dress.
